Project - MrWatt.nl
One of my first projects i worked on was the website of Mr Watt. Mr Watt is an “Energie Prestatie Advies” website, showing information about energy consumption and the measurements of it.
My work on that website was to convert it from .psd to html/css. php was also used for the contact form and calling functions of the website.

The History
Netbiz is an Internet business company, involved with domain name registrations, website hosting and website designing and developing.

Corné Rooster, 29 years old, is an experienced programmer having developed two content management systems (CMS – Hospitality & Enterprise), starting with specializing in Horeca websites and applications. A talented programmer, being able to code in html/css, php/mysql, javascript and with a specialization in actionscript/flash, he is able to code several projects without difficulty. He is also the photographer of Netbiz.
Dharmen, 27 years old, is the PR of the company, being able to control the management system and assist every customer who has any kind of problem using the products of Netbiz. Dharmen is also a designer, being able to create layouts for a variety of applications.

The overview
During this internship i have learnt several things i have never heard before. I have been working with experienced people, who are professionals on their field, and have helped me with all my questions and problems while designing or programming a website.
My first tasks were to edit the code of some websites, to meet the needs of a customer. These varied from editing banners in flash to hard coding them in .aspx.
Following, i made several webisite designs from a .psd to html/css, and also php with mysql. I have worked on wordpress code (edit and add), but also on the specialized CMS system of my internship’s network, “Enterprise CMS”, which is developed by the company itself.
Furthermore, i worked with panorama photos, which are 360 degree photoshoots of hotels around Holland, advertised in their websites.
Most of the work i have been doing is related to programming, working with html and php. Also i have been through aspx too. Thats probably how the next month will be too.
-
What is going reasonably well, what isn’t yet and what isn’t?
I don’t think i can complain about something. Everyday i have something to work on, i am learning new things everyday and i am working on my current competencies to make them even better. The working environment is friendly, everyone is helping me with problems i stumble to, and the level of skills i have now is far better than before the internship.
I think (and hope) that the company’s side is also the same with mine. I haven’t heard any complains to think otherwise.
-
What is that you have to work on if you want to “pass” your placement?
I want to work even more on my php and aspx skills. I want by the end of this placement to be able to script fluent without questions and errors. Also, i want to work a bit more on my designing skills, and be able to come up with creative ideas and solutions.
The study programme has the same visuals as me. I have to develop and improve my skills based also on the minor i am going to follow, which is “Media Developer Web and mobile”.
-
Which of the three fields of expertise of a CMD professional are covered well, not so well or not at all in your placement as you see it now?
Designing and programming are covered really well in my placement. Both fields have their specialized people working on them, which from i can learn valuable thing regarding these two fields of expertise. Marketing is also covered, but i am not being totally part of it. I am less interested in marketing in contrast to the other two fields.
-
If you want to work on your stronger and weaker sides and things that are not covered so well in your placement, which restrictions and which resources do you envisage? In the short term and longer term?
Starting with the weak side, i want to work more on aspx. For that , i will have the help of three good programmers working in my placement, guiding me through to find out more about it. That also stands for php. One of the persons in the placement is very experienced in php and can help me develop my skills. I don’t think i will have any restrictions since the people at the placement are experienced enough to help me develop my skills.
-
Indicate with whom you have discussed this and for which particular points these people have contributed.
I have discussed this with my SLC during the second year, indicating that i want to develop my programming skills since i am going to follow the minor related to programming. Also, i have had discussions with my co-workers in the placement, to know up to what degree they can help me develop my skills more. My SLC helped me understand which way (programming) i want to follow, and my co-workers, by showing me how everything works, made me decide what i want to improve.
-
Discuss the relation of your Personal Activity Plan of the second year and, the feedback from fellow students and your SLC that year.
In my Personal Activity Plan made in the second year, i mentioned that i want to improve my skills regarding programming. That includes html/css, php, mysql, aspx and the rest of programming competencies that comes with programming. My SLC and fellow students gave me the same feedback, that i should indeed work more on the programming part instead of spending time with marketing and designing, since thats the subject i will be following.

Lyceum - multiuser blogging
Since the beginning of last week i had been struggling to install lyceum.

Lyceum is a blogging system, similar to wordpress, (actually its based on wordpress), but with extra power. You can setup blogs, alot of them, on the same server, same domain same hosting, without the use of different databases. Coming along, there is a portal page created with it, listing all sub-blogs and recent posts from all blogs.
The use?
Imagine a company. 1000 employees. The company wants one blog per employee. The company has a website http://www.companynamehere.com/ and wants all blogs there. 1000 databases?? hmmmmm….
Lyceum can be very practical for multiblogging. the only downside is the -kinda- complicated installation, which took me alot of hours to figure out.
Finally , it worked.
I did this project for work. Figuring this out can help in developing websites.
A test lyceum forum has been set here.
Feel free to browse through.

Starting up - September 2007
First of welcome to my blog. this blog is about my internship , placed in “Netbiz” internet services in utrecht. Before i go into detail of my daily duties and work, i am gonna give you some background information aobut netbiz.
Netbiz is an internet service provider, including hosting services, domain name registrations, but of course website development, with designing and coding involved. The company is stated in Utrecht, were in the same building different internet service company are placed. In this company i am working with 6 different people, with varius specialties each.
The first month.-
During september i’ve gone through many different projects. Starting with some basic edditing on an existing website, then moving on to a design proposal for a company that deals with energie-prestaties. After that one of my tasks were to make several banners for companies, evolving graphics and animations. These were the easy stuff though.
After a point, i learnt how to use the CMS system developed and usedby the company, called “EntrepriseCMS“, this content management system is based on .net and .asp & .aspx. Therefore, the knowledge of .asp + was necessary.
With the help of one of the best programmers i’ve met, Johan (also my supervisor) i learned how to convert websites from html and css to more complicated and sophisticated use of .aspx.
With the help of another programmer-designer, Dharmen, i learned how to use the frontend of the cms, to be able to easy edit websites within the CMS. Its fun!
At this point i have to mention the help of Huib, the colleague sitting beside me, who has always been therefore my questions and helped me out with any problem i stumbled to.
The other person, Corne, is the main programmer of the company. Damn he is GOOD in programming . whenever i look at his screen i see: if { bla bla bla } then { bla bla bla } else {bla bla bla} ! he is GOOD.
In the begining of November, a new colleague joined forces with us. Named Lennaert, he is going to be the other programmer with Corne. Really nice and friendly guy, also helping me out whenever i need help. Oh, he has an iphone too :!
I think this is enough for a first post. Following up this week will be some more info on projects i’ve worked on and more feedback of how things are going.
,Harry
